How a Hydraulic Press Works

This simulation demonstrates Pascal’s Principle which states that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to all portions of the fluid and the walls of its container.

Key relationships:

  • Pressure (P) = Force (F) / Area (A) – The same pressure exists throughout the connected fluid
  • Output Force = Input Force × (Areaoutput / Areainput) – A larger output area multiplies the force
  • Mechanical Advantage = Areaoutput / Areainput – The factor by which the force is multiplied

Hydraulic presses use this principle to generate large output forces from relatively small input forces, with applications in car lifts, hydraulic jacks, and industrial machinery.
