1. Introduction to Cell Biology
Cell biology is the study of cells, which are the basic structural and functional units of life. All living organisms, from tiny bacteria to large plants and animals, are made up of cells. Some organisms, like bacteria, consist of a single cell (unicellular), while others, like humans, have millions of cells (multicellular).
Why Study Cells?
Cells carry out all the processes necessary for life, such as growth, reproduction, energy production, and waste removal. Understanding cells helps us learn how living things function and how diseases affect the body.
2. The Cell: The Basic Unit of Life
A cell is the smallest unit that can perform all life processes. It is enclosed by a membrane and contains various structures that help it function.
Types of Cells
- Prokaryotic Cells – These cells lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Example: Bacteria.
- Eukaryotic Cells – These cells have a well-defined nucleus and organelles. Example: Plant and animal cells.
Differences Between Plant and Animal Cells

3. Cell Structure and Its Components
Cells are made up of different parts, each with a specific function.
A. Cell Wall (Only in Plant Cells)
- Found in plant cells, fungi, and some bacteria.
- Made of cellulose, providing support and protection.
- Gives rigidity to plants, helping them stand upright.
B. Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane)
- Present in both plant and animal cells.
- A thin, flexible layer that surrounds the cell.
- Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell (selectively permeable).
- Made of lipids and proteins.
C. Nucleus: The Control Center of the Cell
- Contains DNA, which carries genetic information.
- Controls cell activities such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
- Surrounded by a nuclear membrane that protects it.
- Contains nucleolus, which helps in ribosome production.
D. Cell Organelles: The Working Units of the Cell
Organelles are small structures within a cell that perform specific functions.
- Mitochondria – The powerhouse of the cell; generates energy.
- Ribosomes – Produce proteins required for growth and repair.
- Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
- Rough ER – Has ribosomes; helps in protein synthesis.
- Smooth ER – Lacks ribosomes; makes lipids and detoxifies cells.
- Golgi Apparatus – Modifies, packages, and transports proteins.
- Lysosomes (Animal Cells Only) – Contain enzymes to digest waste and harmful substances.
- Vacuoles – Store water, nutrients, and waste; larger in plant cells.
- Chloroplasts (Plant Cells Only) – Contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
4. Cell Specialization in Plants and Animals
Cells in multicellular organisms are specialized to perform specific tasks.
A. Specialized Cells in Plants
- Xylem Cells – Transport water and minerals from roots to leaves.
- Phloem Cells – Transport food (sugar) from leaves to other parts.
- Guard Cells – Control the opening and closing of stomata.
B. Specialized Cells in Animals
- Muscle Cells – Help in movement and contraction.
- Nerve Cells (Neurons) – Transmit signals and control body functions.
- Red Blood Cells – Carry oxygen throughout the body.
- White Blood Cells – Help in fighting infections.
5. Division of Labour in Cells
In a multicellular organism, different types of cells work together to maintain life. This concept is known as division of labour.
How It Works?
- Each organelle inside a cell has a specific function, just like different workers in a factory.
- Different types of cells form tissues, which combine to form organs, and organs work together to form organ systems.
- Example: In humans, muscle cells form muscle tissue, which helps in movement, while nerve cells form nervous tissue, which transmits signals.
