⭐ Introduction to Microscopy
Let’s start with a simple question:
Have you ever seen a cell with your naked eye?
No! Because cells are very small – so small that you need a microscope to see them. That’s where microscopy comes in.
🔍 Microscopy is the technique of using a microscope to see things that are too small to be seen with the naked eye.
Think of it like a powerful magnifying glass that helps us look into the tiny world of cells, bacteria, viruses, and organelles.
🔬 Types of Microscopy
There are two main types of microscopy:
- Light Microscopy
- Electron Microscopy
Let’s understand each in detail:
🌟 1. Light Microscopy
🔅 How does it work?
In a light microscope, light is used to see the object. Here’s how:
- Light passes through the object.
- Then it goes through two glass lenses:
- The first lens magnifies the object (makes it bigger).
- The second lens magnifies it again (makes it even bigger!).
- The light forms a clear, enlarged image that reaches your eyes.
🔍 Magnification
- Light microscopes can magnify up to 1500 times (1500X).
That means an object appears 1500 times bigger than it really is.
🧠 Example:
If a cell is 0.001 mm, under a light microscope it would appear about 1.5 mm, which is big enough to be seen easily.
🔬 Resolving Power
Let’s understand this new term:
🔧 Resolving Power: The ability to see two close objects as separate.
- Light microscopes can clearly see things as small as 0.2 micrometres (µm).
👉 1 µm = 1/1000 mm.
If something is smaller than 0.2 µm, this microscope cannot see it clearly.
✅ Advantages
- It can be used to see living organisms (like bacteria swimming or cells dividing).
- However, most cells are transparent, and we need stains (special dyes) to see parts like nucleus or mitochondria.
- ❗ But staining usually kills the cells – so if we want to study living things, we have to avoid strong stains.
