Lysosomes are spherical-shaped organelles (small parts of the cell) with a single outer membrane. Inside, they are filled with special chemicals called enzymes that help break down or digest things.

When lysosomes do not have the right enzyme, harmful substances build up in the cell. This causes diseases:

1. Pompe’s Disease

  • Missing enzyme: Can’t break down glycogen.
  • Result: Glycogen builds up in liver cells and damages them.

2. Tay-Sachs Disease

  • Missing enzyme to break down lipids (fats).
  • Lipids collect in nerve cells in the brain.
  • Symptoms: Brain damage, mental retardation, and death in early childhood.

Example:

  • When a tadpole becomes a frog, the tail disappears.
  • This is because lysosomes destroy the tail cells at the right time.
