The Large Intestine:
What is the Large Intestine?
The large intestine is the final part of the digestive system, also called the alimentary canal. After the food passes through the small intestine, whatever is left moves into the large intestine. Even though it’s called “large,” it is actually shorter than the small intestine but has a larger diameter (it is wider). It’s about 1 meter long in adults, much shorter than the small intestine which is about 6 meters long.
The main job of the large intestine is to absorb water, salts, and some vitamins from the leftover food material. This process is very important because it helps keep the body hydrated and recovers valuable nutrients that were not absorbed earlier.
Structure of the Large Intestine
Unlike the small intestine, the large intestine is not twisted or convoluted inside the body, and its inner surface is smooth — meaning it does not have villi (those tiny finger-like projections we saw in the small intestine to help with absorption).
The large intestine is divided into three main parts:
- Cecum
- Colon
- Rectum
Let’s understand each part.
Cecum
The cecum is a kind of pouch or blind sac where the large intestine begins. It is located at the junction where the ileum (the last part of the small intestine) connects to the large intestine.
- Sticking out from the cecum is a small, narrow, finger-like tube called the vermiform appendix (vermiform means “worm-shaped”).
- The appendix has no real function in human digestion today; it is considered a vestigial structure. This means it is a leftover from our evolutionary ancestors who might have used it for digesting tough plant material. Nowadays, it’s like a small remnant with no major role, although it can sometimes cause health problems if infected (appendicitis).
Colon
The colon is the longest part of the large intestine and lies right after the cecum. It is divided into three parts based on its position:
- Ascending colon: Goes upward on the right side of the abdomen.
- Transverse colon: Crosses horizontally from right to left.
- Descending colon: Moves down on the left side.
The main function of the colon is to absorb water from the remaining food waste. As water is removed, the waste becomes thicker and more solid, turning into what we call faeces (or stool).
What makes up faeces?
- Lots of bacteria (friendly ones like E. coli)
- Indigestible plant fibers like cellulose (the tough material in plants we can’t digest)
- Other leftover undigested food
- Sloughed-off (shed) mucosal cells from the intestine lining
- Bile pigments (which give faeces its brown color)
- Water (some remains even after absorption)
Rectum
The rectum is the last section of the large intestine where the faeces are temporarily stored before being expelled.
- The rectum ends at the anus, which is the opening through which faeces leaves the body.
- The anus has two muscle rings called sphincters:
- Internal sphincter: Made of smooth muscle, works automatically without conscious control.
- External sphincter: Made of striated muscle, which you can control consciously.
Defecation Reflex and Control
When the rectum fills with faeces, it stretches, triggering a signal called the defecation reflex. This reflex causes the internal sphincter to relax, letting faeces move closer to the anus.
- In infants, this reflex is automatic and involuntary because their brain (especially the higher brain centers) is not developed enough to control it consciously.
- In adults, with brain maturity, people learn to control the external sphincter voluntarily. This means adults can decide when to go to the toilet and delay defecation if needed.
This ability to control is important for social reasons and personal hygiene.
Friendly Bacteria in the Colon
The colon is home to many bacteria, like E. coli, which live and multiply there. These bacteria are actually helpful!
- They produce amino acids which are building blocks of proteins.
- They also produce vitamin K, which is vital because it helps our blood clot properly. Without enough vitamin K, even small injuries could cause dangerous bleeding.
- The vitamin K produced in the large intestine is absorbed into the blood, helping keep our body healthy.
Egestion: How Waste Leaves the Body
Egestion is the process of expelling undigested waste material (faeces) from the body through the anus.
- In infants, egestion happens automatically due to spinal reflexes (without the baby’s control).
- In adults, egestion becomes a conscious action controlled by the brain, allowing people to decide the timing.
This development from involuntary to voluntary control shows how the nervous system matures and how our bodies adapt to social living.

Imagine you have a sponge filled with dirty water (this dirty water represents food waste after digestion). The sponge absorbs the water, leaving behind solid dirt. Similarly, the large intestine absorbs water from food waste, turning it from liquid to solid faeces.
