🔷 Phylum Porifera (Sponges)
- These are simple aquatic animals, mostly marine, with a few freshwater types.
- They lack tissues and organs, and most are asymmetrical.
- Their body contains many small pores (ostia) for water intake and a large opening (osculum) for water exit.
- They have a three-layered body wall:
- Pinacocytes (outer flat cells)
- Mesohyle (jelly-like middle with amoeboid cells)
- Choanocytes (collar cells lining the inner cavity)
- Their skeleton is made of calcium carbonate or silica spicules.
- They reproduce asexually by budding, regeneration, or forming gemmules — resistant capsules that help them survive harsh conditions.
🔷 Phylum Cnidaria (Jellyfish, Hydra, Corals)
- Mostly marine animals, some live in freshwater.
- They can be sessile (fixed in place like hydra, corals) or motile (like jellyfish).
- They have radial symmetry and are diploblastic — meaning their body has two tissue layers:
- Epidermis (outer)
- Gastrodermis (inner), with mesoglea (jelly-like middle layer)
- They have special stinging cells called cnidocytes, which contain nematocysts to capture prey and defend themselves.
- They have a sac-like digestive system with one opening — the mouth, which also acts as an anus.
- Surrounding the mouth are tentacles for catching food.
- They have a nerve net instead of a brain and no systems for respiration, excretion, or transport.
- Two body forms:
- Polyp (cylindrical, attached, asexual reproduction)
