🌱 Speciation – The Birth of New Species
Speciation is the process through which new species are formed from existing ones over time.
It happens when populations change so much (genetically or behaviorally) that they can no longer interbreed, even if they are brought together again.

1️⃣ Allopatric Speciation
🔍 Definition:
This happens when a group of a species gets physically separated (like by a mountain, river, or ocean). Over time, they evolve separately and become different species.

Darwin’s finches on the Galápagos Islands. Birds from the same ancestor ended up on different islands and evolved differently to suit their environment.

2️⃣ Peripatric Speciation
🔍 Definition:
A small group from a species gets isolated at the edge of a larger population. Because the group is small, they evolve faster and differently.

3️⃣ Parapatric Speciation
🔍 Definition:
Here, populations are next to each other (no complete physical barrier), but the environments are different. Gene flow is limited, and each population adapts to its local environment.
🧠 Example:
Grass species (Anthoxanthum odoratum) growing near mines evolve resistance to metal in the soil. Grass away from the mines does not.

- Populations are side-by-side (para) but living in different conditions, so they evolve differently.
4️⃣ Sympatric Speciation
🔍 Definition:
This happens when new species form in the same geographical area, without any physical barrier. It usually occurs because of:
- Polyploidy: When a plant or animal suddenly ends up with extra chromosomes, making it incompatible with others
- Niche differentiation: When groups in the same area use different resources or live differently
🧠 Example:
A plant undergoes polyploidy and cannot mate with others anymore. It becomes a new species on the spot.

- Sympatric = Same location
- But species take different paths due to genetic or behavioral changes
