π Domain Eukarya: Introduction
Imagine all living things in the world grouped into big categories, like putting different types of clothes into drawers. One of the biggest drawers is Domain Eukarya.
π¬ What makes Eukarya special?
All living things in this domain have eukaryotic cells. That means their cells have:
- A nucleus (like a brain of the cell where DNA is stored)
- Organelles with membranes (like tiny organs in the cell doing different jobsβlike mitochondria, chloroplasts, etc.)
This domain includes four major kingdoms:
- Protista
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
Now let’s open each of these kingdoms and see what’s inside.
π§« Kingdom Protista
This is a very diverse group. You can think of them as the leftoversβorganisms that donβt neatly fit into animals, plants, or fungi. They are mostly simple life forms.
π Key Features
- Eukaryotic (have nucleus)
- Mostly unicellular (one cell only), but some are colonial or simple multicellular.
- Live in water or moist environments.
- Some cause diseases.
- Some make their own food; others eat other organisms.
β οΈ Simple multicellular means:
They can have more than one cell, but they don’t have specialized tissues or complex organs, like animals or plants do.
𧬠Three Main Types of Protists
1. Protozoa β Animal-like protists
- How do they live? They move and eat like tiny animals.
- Food: Heterotrophs (they eat other organisms).
- Examples:
- Amoeba β moves by changing shape.
- Paramecium β moves with tiny hairs.
- Plasmodium β causes malaria.
- Trypanosoma β causes sleeping sickness.
2. Algae β Plant-like protists
- How do they live? Like plants, they make their own food using sunlight (photosynthesis).
- Cell wall: Made of cellulose.
- Examples:
- Euglena β can act like both animal and plant.
- Diatoms β have beautiful glass-like shells.
3. Myxomycota & Oomycota β Fungi-like protists
- How do they live? They feed on dead things (like fungi).
- Structure: Have hyphae-like bodies (thread-like).
- Examples:
- Slime molds β move and eat like amoeba.
- Water molds β found in water or moist soil.
π Kingdom Fungi
Fungi are neither plants nor animals. They are in a class of their own.

- Eukaryotic
- Heterotrophic β can’t make their own food.
- Absorb nutrients from surroundings (like a sponge soaks up water).
- Can be unicellular (like yeast) or multicellular (like mushrooms).
- Have cell walls made of chitin (not cellulose like plants).
π§ͺ Uses of Fungi
- π Food industry: Used to make bread (yeast), cheese, beer.
- π Medicine: Penicillin comes from a fungus called Penicillium β it kills harmful bacteria.
𧬠Major Groups of Fungi
1. Zygomycota β Molds
- No divisions (septa) in their thread-like hyphae.
- Example: Rhizopus β bread mold (grows on stale bread).
2. Ascomycota β Sac fungi
- Largest group of fungi.
- Have septate hyphae (with cross walls).
- Examples:
- Yeasts (used in baking),
- Neurospora (used in genetics),
- Morels, truffles (fancy edible mushrooms),
- Found in lichens (fungus + algae living together),
- Some help plant roots (mycorrhizae).
3. Basidiomycota β Club fungi
- Also have septate hyphae.
- Examples:
- Mushrooms, toadstools,
- Puffballs, bracket fungi,
- Rusts and smuts (plant parasites).
πΏ Kingdom Plantae
Plants are the green life forms that provide oxygen and food for other living things.
π Key Features
- Eukaryotic and multicellular.
- Have cell walls made of cellulose.
- Autotrophs β make their own food using photosynthesis.
- Develop from embryos (early stage of life in plants).
- Found almost everywhere: land, water, mountains, deserts.
π± Major Groups of Plants
1. Nonvascular Plants (Bryophytes)
- No tubes (no xylem or phloem) to carry water.
- Usually small and found in moist areas.
- Examples:
- Mosses, liverworts, hornworts.
2. Vascular Plants
- Have xylem (carries water) and phloem (carries food).
- Divided into:
- Seedless Plants β donβt produce seeds.
- Example: Ferns
- Seed Plants β reproduce using seeds.
- Examples: Conifers (pine trees), flowering plants (roses, wheat, apple trees).
- Seedless Plants β donβt produce seeds.
