📚 Summary: Phyla Arthropoda and Echinodermata
In this lecture, students will explore two major invertebrate phyla: Arthropoda and Echinodermata, learning about their body structures, systems, functions, and unique features.
Phylum Arthropoda
This is the largest and most diverse animal phylum, including insects, spiders, crabs, centipedes, and scorpions. Students will learn:
- Arthropods are triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical coelomates.
- Their body is segmented and often divided into tagmata (head, thorax, abdomen).
- They have jointed appendages, specialized for movement, feeding, reproduction, and other functions.
- Their body is covered with a chitinous exoskeleton, which they shed and replace in a process called molting (ecdysis).
- They have a tube-like digestive system, open circulatory system, and Malpighian tubules for excretion.
- Their blood, called haemolymph, is colorless and lacks hemoglobin.
- Tracheal tubes or gills support respiration.
- The nervous system includes a brain (cerebral ganglia), ventral nerve cord, and segmental ganglia.
- Sense organs include compound eyes and antennae.
- Most arthropods are unisexual and reproduce sexually.
Phylum Echinodermata
This phylum includes marine animals such as starfish, sea urchins, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, and cake urchins. Students will study:
- Echinoderms are triploblastic, coelomate deuterostomes.
- Adults show radial symmetry (in fives or multiples of five), while larvae are bilaterally symmetrical.
- Their body contains a calcareous endoskeleton made of plates (ossicles), often forming spines.
- They possess a unique water vascular system, used for movement (tube feet), feeding, and gas exchange.
- The system includes a madreporite, ring canal, radial canals, lateral canals, and tube feet.
- Their digestive system is complete, but respiration and excretion occur through body surface and tube feet.
- They have a nerve net and nerve ring with radial nerves.
- Echinoderms can reproduce asexually (by splitting and regeneration) and sexually, and are unisexual.
