In this lesson, you will study the group of animals known as chordates. These include fish, amphibians (frogs), reptiles, birds, and mammals. They are united by four key characteristics present at least at some stage in their life cycle.

🧬 Basic Characteristics of Chordates

All chordates share these four unique features, which may appear during embryonic (initial growth) or adult life:

1️⃣ 🌀 Notochord

A flexible rod-like structure [semi-rigid structure = نیم سخت چھڑی نما ساخت] made of vacuolated cells, present between the gut and nerve cord.

  • In simple chordates, the notochord remains throughout life.
  • In vertebrates, it is replaced by the vertebral column [spinal column = ریڑھ کی ہڈی] as they develop.

2️⃣ 🌊 Pharyngeal Slits

These are openings in the throat region [lateral walls of pharynx = گلے کے کناروں میں سوراخ].

  • In fish, these develop into gills.
  • In other animals, like humans and birds, they change into different structures or disappear during development.

3️⃣ 🧠 Tubular Nerve Cord

A hollow nerve cord [tubular = نلکی نما] that runs along the back (dorsal side) of the body.

  • It expands at the front to form the brain.

4️⃣ 🐒 Post-Anal Tail

A tail that extends beyond the anus [post-anal = مقعد کے بعد].

  • Some chordates keep the tail all their life.
  • Others, like humans, lose it before birth.

🦠 Invertebrate Chordates (without a backbone)

These animals do not have a vertebral column, but still show all the chordate characteristics at some stage.

  • Urochordata – Notochord and nerve cord only in larval stage.
    Example: Sea squirts
  • Cephalochordata – Notochord is present throughout life.
    Example: Amphioxus

🦴 Vertebrates (with backbone)

These are chordates with a proper vertebral column (spinal column) and a cranium (skull).

They are divided into two major groups:

🐟 1. Group Pisces (Fish group)

Characteristic: No limbs (legs or arms)

Includes three classes:

🐍 Class Cyclostomata

  • Body: Eel-like, scaleless
  • Skeleton: Made of cartilage [cartilage = کرکری ہڈی]
  • Heart: Single circuit with 1 atrium and 1 ventricle
  • Fertilization: External
  • Examples: Lampreys, Hagfish

🦈 Class Chondrichthyes (Cartilaginous fish)

  • Skeleton: Made of cartilage
  • Skin: Covered with placoid scales [tooth-like = دانتوں جیسے چھوٹے چھلکے]
  • Special Feature: Spiracles [breathing holes = سانس لینے کے سوراخ] behind eyes
  • Fertilization: Internal
  • Swim bladder: Absent
  • Examples: Sharks, Skates, Rays

🐠 Class Osteichthyes (Bony fish)

  • Skeleton: Made of bones
  • Body: Covered with bony scales
  • Mouth: Terminal (at the front), with jaws
  • Swim bladder: Present – helps fish float
  • Gills: 4 pairs, covered with operculum [a bony flap = ہڈی جیسا ڈھکن]
  • Nervous System: 10 pairs of cranial nerves
  • Fertilization: Mostly external
  • Examples:
    • Freshwater: Rohu, Trout, Katla
    • Marine: Seahorse, Flying fish, Angler fish

👣 2. Group Tetrapoda (Four-limbed animals)

📌 You will study this group in the next lesson, which includes amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals – all animals that have four limbs.
