🌍 Overview of the Heart’s Function
Think of the human heart as a double-barrel water pump working non-stop to keep blood flowing in your body.
It performs two major tasks:
- Pulmonary Circulation – Sends blood to the lungs to get oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
- Systemic Circulation – Sends oxygen-rich blood to all body parts, such as the brain, kidneys, skin, muscles, etc., except the lungs.
💡 Why is it called a double pump?
Because the heart has two sides:
- Right side handles deoxygenated blood (blood with little or no oxygen).
- Left side handles oxygenated blood (blood rich in oxygen).
These two types of blood are kept completely separate, which is important so oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich blood don’t mix.
🫀 Right Side of the Heart – (Deoxygenated Blood Flow)
Let’s follow the journey of blood from the body back to the heart.
- Right Atrium:
- Acts like a collection room.
- Receives deoxygenated blood from the body through two major veins:
- Superior vena cava (from the upper body like head and arms)
- Inferior vena cava (from the lower body like legs and abdomen)
- Tricuspid Valve:
- Like a one-way gate, it allows blood to flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle, but not backward.
- Right Ventricle:
- When it contracts, it pushes blood through the pulmonary semilunar valve into the pulmonary trunk.
- Pulmonary Arteries:
- These arteries carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs (remember, pulmonary arteries are the only arteries that carry deoxygenated blood).
- In the lungs, the blood drops off carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen.
💨 Left Side of the Heart – (Oxygenated Blood Flow)
Now let’s follow the journey of oxygenated blood back to the heart and into the body.
- Pulmonary Veins:
- These veins bring oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
- (Pulmonary veins are the only veins that carry oxygenated blood.)
- Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve:
- Allows blood to pass into the left ventricle and prevents backflow.
- Left Ventricle:
- The most muscular chamber (because it has to pump blood to the whole body!).
- It contracts powerfully and sends blood through the aortic semilunar valve into the aorta.
- Aorta:
- The largest artery in the body.
- Distributes oxygen-rich blood to every part of the body through smaller arteries.
🧠 Real-life example: Imagine a water pump system in a building. The right side of the heart is like the pump that sends dirty water to the water treatment plant (lungs), and the left side is the pump that sends clean water to every apartment (your organs).
