TermExplanationExample
Blood PressureForce of blood against vessel wallsLike water pressure in pipes
Systolic PressureHighest pressure when heart contracts120 mm Hg
Diastolic PressureLowest pressure when heart relaxes80 mm Hg
BaroreceptorsSensors that detect pressure changesAdjust heartbeat and vessel diameter
ADHIncreases water retentionActs when you are dehydrated
ANHRemoves extra water and saltActs when there’s too much blood volume

Understanding blood pressure helps you know:

  • Why doctors check it regularly
  • What causes dizziness, fainting, or high BP
  • How your heart, kidneys, and brain work together to maintain balance

🫀 11.4 – Cardiovascular Disorders

Introduction: What are Cardiovascular Disorders?

Cardiovascular disorders are problems or diseases that affect the heart (cardio) and blood vessels (vascular).

These disorders are a major cause of death not just in rich countries, but also in developing countries like Pakistan. That’s because the heart and blood vessels are extremely important — they carry oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body. When this system is damaged, it affects the entire body.

Cardiovascular disorder = Any disease or condition that affects the heart and blood vessels.

🔎 Examples of Cardiovascular Disorders include:

  • Atherosclerosis
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

But today we’ll mainly focus on atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, and how doctors check these conditions.

🚧 Atherosclerosis – The Clogging of Arteries

📘 Definition:

Atherosclerosis means “deposition within arteries” — or in simple words, when things like fats and cholesterol build up inside arteries.

🧱 What gets deposited?

These materials include:

  • Fatty substances
  • Cholesterol
  • Fibrin (a protein that helps in clotting)
  • Smooth muscle cells (in excess)
  • Cellular waste and debris

These substances form plaque, a sticky material that blocks the blood flow inside the arteries.

💡 Real-Life Example:

Imagine a water pipe in your house. If mud, dirt, and waste start building up inside the pipe, the flow of water becomes slower and narrower, and eventually, the pipe could be completely blocked. That’s exactly what happens in atherosclerosis — blood cannot flow freely through narrowed arteries.

🧈 Role of Cholesterol – The Main Villain

Out of all the things deposited, cholesterol is considered the most dangerous.

  • It’s a fat-like substance found in food like butter, meat, cheese, and oil.
  • While some cholesterol is needed in the body, too much — especially from an unhealthy diet — leads to plaque buildup.
