Part 1: Hypertension and Its Effects
π What is Hypertension?
Letβs start with a simple definition.
Hypertension is when your blood pressure stays high for a long time. Itβs also called high blood pressure.
To be specific, a person is said to have hypertension when their blood pressure stays above 140/90 mmHg for several days or weeks.
π‘ What is Blood Pressure?
Before we go further, let me explain blood pressure.
Blood pressure is the force your blood exerts on the walls of your blood vessels (especially arteries) as it flows through them.
Imagine water flowing through a rubber pipe. If the water is under too much pressure, it might burst the pipe. The same can happen with blood vessels.
π§ Normal vs High Blood Pressure:
- Normal: Around 120/80 mmHg
- High: More than 140/90 mmHg (Hypertension)
π§ͺ Causes of Hypertension:
There can be many reasons for high blood pressure:
- Stress
When you’re worried, your body releases stress hormones that make your heart beat faster and vessels tighten. - Obesity
Extra body fat puts more strain on the heart and blood vessels. - High Salt Intake
Salt retains water in the body, which increases blood volume β higher pressure. - Smoking
Nicotine tightens blood vessels and raises pressure. - Genetics (Hereditary)
If your parents or grandparents had hypertension, you may also develop it. - Hormonal or Nervous Disorders
These can interfere with how the body controls blood pressure.
β οΈ Complications Caused by Hypertension
1. π§ Brain Damage β Brain Hemorrhage
High pressure can burst a blood vessel in the brain. This is called a brain hemorrhage and can lead to stroke or permanent brain damage.
2. π Heart Damage β Congestive Heart Failure
If the heart constantly pumps against high pressure, it gets tired and weak.
Over time, it can’t pump blood effectively and blood starts collecting in the heart and lungs. This is called congestive heart failure.
3. 𧫠Kidney Damage
Kidneys filter the blood. High pressure can damage nephrons (filtering units), making kidneys less effective.
This leads to salt and water staying in the blood, which further raises blood pressure β a dangerous cycle.
π Summary of Hypertension Effects:
| Organ | Effect of Hypertension |
| Brain | Brain hemorrhage, stroke |
| Heart | Congestive heart failure |
| Kidneys | Nephron damage |
