👨⚕️ 2.8 – Normal Flora
Now let’s learn about the “friendly” bacteria that live in and on our bodies.
What is Normal Flora?
Normal flora means the collection of microorganisms (mainly bacteria) that live on our skin, mouth, gut, and other surfaces of our body.
📌 These bacteria live with us peacefully and don’t cause diseases. In fact, they help us!
🧠 Mnemonic: “Some People Involve Antibodies”
- S – Synthesis of vitamins
- P – Prevention of colonization
- I – Inhibition of pathogens
- A – Antibodies (stimulation of)
This helps remember the 4 benefits of normal flora.
1️⃣ Synthesis of Vitamins
Some bacteria in your gut produce vitamins that your body can absorb.
💊 Examples:
- Vitamin K (important for blood clotting)
- Vitamin B12
- Other B vitamins
📌 These bacteria make more vitamins than they need — and the extra goes to you!
2️⃣ Prevention of Colonization by Pathogens
Normal bacteria cover your body’s surfaces.
🛡️ They:
- Take up space and nutrients, so bad bacteria can’t settle in.
- Form a protective barrier.
📌 It’s like a crowd at a concert — no room for intruders!
3️⃣ Inhibition or Killing of Pathogens
Some bacteria release substances that kill harmful microbes.
🔫 They produce:
- Acids
- Enzymes
- Antibiotic-like chemicals
📌 These help stop infections before they begin.
4️⃣ Stimulation of Cross-Reactive Antibodies
Some of your immune cells create antibodies in response to normal flora.
🛡️ These low-level antibodies may also protect you against related harmful bacteria.
📌 It’s like practice fighting — your immune system learns how to protect you better.
