🧪 PART 1: LYSOSOMES – The Cell’s Clean-up Crew
🔬 What Are Lysosomes?
Lysosomes are spherical-shaped organelles (small parts of the cell) with a single outer membrane. Inside, they are filled with special chemicals called enzymes that help break down or digest things.
📌 Location:
- Found in eukaryotic cells (cells with a nucleus)
- Very common in white blood cells, which fight infections.
📖 Mnemonic to Remember Lysosome’s Job:
“LYSO = Lysis = Break Down”
Mnemonic: “Lysosomes LOVE to Lick Leftovers.”
- This helps you remember that lysosomes digest and remove leftover or damaged materials in the cell.
⚙️ Functions of Lysosomes (What They Do)
- Digest Foreign Intruders:
- Like bacteria or viruses that enter the body.
- Example: Just like a security guard catches and throws out a thief, lysosomes destroy invading bacteria!
- Autophagy (Self-Digestion):
- When old or damaged cell parts need to be removed.
- Example: Just like you clean out your old school bag, lysosomes clean out worn-out cell parts.
- Recycle Materials:
- Break down big molecules like fats, proteins, and sugars into small pieces.
- These are reused by the cell to make new things.
🧬 Enzymes Inside Lysosomes:
- Lysosomes contain around 40 types of enzymes, called hydrolytic enzymes.
- These enzymes:
- Are made in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
- Are sent to the Golgi apparatus where they are modified and packed into lysosomes.
💡 These enzymes are very powerful and could harm the cell — that’s why the membrane of the lysosome keeps them locked inside.
⚠️ Lysosomal Storage Diseases
When lysosomes do not have the right enzyme, harmful substances build up in the cell. This causes diseases:
1. Pompe’s Disease
- Missing enzyme: Can’t break down glycogen.
- Result: Glycogen builds up in liver cells and damages them.
2. Tay-Sachs Disease
- Missing enzyme to break down lipids (fats).
- Lipids collect in nerve cells in the brain.
- Symptoms: Brain damage, mental retardation, and death in early childhood.
💀 Selective Cell Death – A Good Thing?!
Yes! Sometimes cells must die for the benefit of the body.
Example:
- When a tadpole becomes a frog, the tail disappears.
- This is because lysosomes destroy the tail cells at the right time.
This process helps in development and shaping of the organism. It’s called programmed cell death or apoptosis.
