Phospholipids are like bricks of a wall—they build the plasma membrane (outer covering of cells). Without them, cells wouldn’t be able to keep their contents inside or control what comes in or goes out.

Phospholipids are made from a molecule called phosphatidic acid. This acid is the base or starting point of all phospholipids.

Let’s break down phosphatidic acid:

  • 1 Glycerol – Think of this as the backbone or the centerpiece.
  • 2 Fatty Acids – These are long chains of carbon and hydrogen that attach to the glycerol. They form the tail part of the molecule.
  • 1 Phosphate Group – This is attached to the third carbon of glycerol.

Then, an extra component called a nitrogenous base attaches to the phosphate. These bases can be:

  • Choline
  • Ethanolamine
  • Serine

When you add any of these bases to phosphatidic acid, you get a complete phospholipid.

  1. Phosphatidyl Choline (Lecithin) – Found in egg yolks and soybeans. This forms a major part of cell membranes.

Lecithin = lipid + choline — important for the structure of brain and nerve cells.

Phospholipids have a special structure that helps them form membranes:

Head

  • Made of phosphate and nitrogenous base
  • Polar = loves water (hydrophilic)
  • This part faces the outside or inside of the cell, where water is present

Tail

  • Made of two fatty acids
  • Non-polar = hates water (hydrophobic)
  • This part hides away from water

This dual nature makes them perfect for forming a lipid bilayer, where two layers of phospholipids arrange themselves:

  • Heads face the water (outside and inside of cell)
  • Tails hide inside the membrane
