Proteins are like machines made up of smaller parts (amino acids). These parts are joined together in a specific order and shape, which decides what the protein can do in the body.
To understand how a protein works, we need to understand its structure, which is built in four levels:
- Primary structure
- Secondary structure
- Tertiary structure
- Quaternary structure
๐น 1. Primary Structure โ The Basic Sequence
๐ What is it?
The primary structure is the simple, straight chain of amino acids arranged one after another in a specific sequence.
Imagine beads on a string. Each bead is an amino acid, and the whole string is the primary structure of a protein.
- It tells us which amino acids are present and in what order.
- This order is very important, just like letters in a word. Changing one letter changes the whole word!

- The sequence of amino acids decides the shape and function of the protein.
- This sequence is coded in DNA.
- A change in even one amino acid can cause serious diseases.

- Caused by a mistake in just one amino acid at position 6 of the beta chain in hemoglobin.
- Normal amino acid: Glutamic acid
- Replaced by: Valine
- Result:
- Red blood cells become sickle-shaped (like a crescent moon).
- These cells cannot carry oxygen properly.
- Leads to pain, fatigue, and complications.
