What is a Metabolic Pathway Again?
It’s a series of steps (chemical reactions) in the body where:
- Product from Step 1 becomes input for Step 2, and so on.
- In the end, a final desired product is made.
Why Should the Pathway Stop Sometimes?
If the body keeps making the product even after it has enough, it’s a waste of energy and resources.

How Does It Work? (Mechanism
- Final product binds to the first enzyme (not at the active site but somewhere else).
- This changes the shape of the enzyme.
- The enzyme can no longer bind to its starting material (substrate).
- So, the whole process shuts down until the product is needed again.

Imagine you are baking cookies. As soon as the jar is full, you stop baking. Why waste flour and electricity?
Similarly, the body automatically stops enzyme activity when enough product is formed.
Example: ATP Regulation
ATP is the energy currency of cells — like money for energy use.
- If the cell has too much ATP, it doesn’t need to make more.
- So, ATP itself blocks the enzyme that helps make more ATP.
- This is an example of non-competitive feedback inhibition — ATP binds at another place on the enzyme and stops its action.
