🅱️ B. Micronutrients
These nutrients are needed in very small amounts, but they are just as important as macronutrients. Without them, the plant cannot grow or function properly.
There are seven micronutrients:
⚙️ Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Molybdenum, Copper, Chlorine, Boron
🧠 Their roles and deficiency effects:
- Iron (Fe)
- Important for making chlorophyll and helps in energy production.
- Deficiency: Causes interveinal chlorosis — leaves turn yellow between the veins.
- Manganese (Mn)
- Needed for photosynthesis, nitrogen, and carbohydrate metabolism.
- Deficiency: Leaves fall early, plants mature late.
- Zinc (Zn)
- Helps in chlorophyll production, root growth, and nutrient uptake.
- Deficiency: Results in stunted growth and small leaves.
- Molybdenum (Mo)
- Very important in nitrogen fixation (used by legumes) and sulfur metabolism.
- Deficiency: Older leaves turn yellow (chlorosis) and plant grows poorly.
- Copper (Cu)
- Helps in making lignin (a substance that strengthens plant cells).
- Also helps in nitrogen use and reproductive growth.
- Deficiency: Leaves become twisted, yellowish, and growth is reduced.
- Chlorine (Cl)
- Helps control the opening and closing of stomata (tiny pores on leaves) and helps in transport of nutrients.
- Deficiency: Rare, but can affect overall plant health.
- Boron (B)
- Important for cell wall formation, reproduction, and sugar transport.
- Deficiency: Affects flower and fruit development.
