🔬 What Are Plastids?

Plastids are double-membrane-bound organelles found only in plant cells and some algae.

  • They perform vital functions like photosynthesis, pigment synthesis, and food storage.
  • All plastids originate from a common precursor: proplastids.

Three Main Types:

  1. Chloroplasts – Green, photosynthetic plastids
  2. Chromoplasts – Colored plastids (red, yellow, orange)
  3. Leucoplasts – Colorless plastids for storage
