Five kingdom classification system by Rebert Whittaker
🧠 Concept 1: What is the Five Kingdom System?
Dear IAA ACADEMY STUDENTS,
Today we are going to learn how scientists divide all living things into five major groups, called kingdoms, based on simple rules or criteria. This system was introduced by American scientist Robert Whittaker in 1969.
🔍 What was the purpose of this classification?
There are millions of living organisms on Earth. To make it easier to study and understand them, scientists grouped them into five big categories based on common features.
📌 Criteria (بنیاد) for Five Kingdom Classification:
Robert Whittaker used three main things to classify organisms:
1. Cell structure (سیل کا ڈھانچہ) — Is it prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
2. Cellular complexity (سادہ یا پیچیدہ) — Is it unicellular or multicellular?
3. Mode of nutrition (غذا کیسے حاصل کرتے ہیں؟) — Do they make their own food or depend on others?
🏷️ The Five Kingdoms Are:
1. Monera
2. Protista
3. Fungi
4. Plantae
5. Animalia
✅ Every organism — from tiny bacteria to big animals — fits into one of these five kingdoms.
🔬 Let’s Understand Each Criterion in Detail:
🔹 1. Cell Type – Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic
- Monera is the only kingdom that contains prokaryotic cells.
🧫 Prokaryotes = simple cells with no nucleus.
(Example: bacteria) - The other four kingdoms (Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia) have eukaryotic cells.
🧬 Eukaryotes = complex cells with a nucleus.
💡 Easy Tip:
“Pro” = No nucleus
“Eu” = True nucleus
🔹 2. Cellular Complexity – Simple vs. Complex
- Monera and Protista are usually unicellular (made of only one cell).
- Protists may also be simple multicellular, but they don’t form tissues.
- Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia are multicellular and more complex.
Note: Simple multicellular organisms (like some protists and fungi) don’t have:
- Complex sex organs
- No embryo formation
🔹 3. Mode of Nutrition – How Do They Get Food?
- Fungi: Absorptive heterotrophs
(They absorb food from decaying matter — like mushrooms on dead wood.) - Plantae: Autotrophs
(They make their own food using sunlight — through photosynthesis.) - Animalia: Heterotrophs
(They eat other organisms — like humans and animals.) - Monera and Protista: Can be autotrophs or heterotrophs depending on the organism

Whittaker grouped all living organisms into five kingdoms based on:
