Three domain system of classification by Carl Woese

“Alright class, today we’re going to learn something very interesting and important in the world of biology β€” it’s about how we classify all living things.”

πŸ“š We’ve already learned about the Five Kingdom Classification System by Robert Whittaker, where all living organisms were divided into five major groups like Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.

βœ… But science keeps improving β€” and new discoveries bring new ideas.

πŸ”Ά Now comes: Three-Domain System by Carl Woese (1990)

βœ‹ In 1990, a famous American microbiologist named Carl Woese made a new discovery.
He found that not all prokaryotes are the same.

Let me say that again:
πŸ‘‰ All prokaryotes are not the same.
We used to think they were β€” but Carl Woese proved otherwise.

🧬 So what did he discover?

He found that prokaryotes can be divided into two very different groups:

  1. Bacteria
  2. Archaea

Both are simple cells β€” they don’t have a nucleus β€” but they are very different inside, especially at the molecular level (like their DNA, enzymes, and cell walls).

🌍 Based on this, Carl Woese introduced a new system called the Three-Domain System.

He said that instead of 5 kingdoms, we should first divide life into three big domains β€” even above kingdoms.

Here they are:

1️⃣ Domain Archaea

These are ancient, extreme-loving microbes β€” they live in very hot, salty, or acidic places.
They are prokaryotes, but different from normal bacteria.

2️⃣ Domain Bacteria

These are the typical bacteria we usually talk about β€” they can live in water, soil, air, even inside us.

3️⃣ Domain Eukarya

This includes all organisms with complex cells β€” with a nucleus.
That means all plants, animals, fungi, and protists come under this domain.

πŸ” A big question students ask:

“Are Archaea more like bacteria or humans?”
The surprising answer is:
πŸ”¬ Archaea are actually more closely related to us (eukaryotes) than to bacteria!

Why?
Because molecular evidence β€” the study of their DNA and proteins β€” shows that:

  • Archaea and Eukaryotes share many common features
  • They likely came from the same ancestor
  • Bacteria split off first, and later Archaea gave rise to Eukarya

This is a very important point in understanding evolution and the history of life.
