π· What is the Circulatory System?
Have you ever wondered how oxygen from your lungs reaches your toes? Or how the nutrients from your food travel to your brain?
Thatβs the job of the circulatory system β the transport system of your body. Just like a city has roads and vehicles to move people and goods, your body has blood vessels and fluids to move important materials around.
πΈ Humans have two transport systems:
- Blood Circulatory System
- Lymphatic System
We’ll talk mostly about the blood circulatory system in this part.
π· 1. The Blood Circulatory System
This is a closed system, which means the blood stays inside blood vessels as it travels through the body.
It has three major parts:
- Blood β the fluid that carries oxygen, nutrients, waste, etc.
- Heart β the pump that pushes the blood.
- Blood Vessels β the network of tubes (arteries, veins, capillaries) through which blood flows.

π Position of the Heart in the Body
- Your heart is located in the middle of the chest but a little to the left side.
- It’s between your lungs.
- The back of the heart touches the vertebral column (your backbone).
- The front of the heart lies behind the sternum (the flat bone in the center of your chest) and the rib cartilages.
π§ Example: Place your hand on the center of your chest and move a bit to the left β that’s where your heart is.
π§± Structure of the Heart
The human heart is like a strong pump made of special muscles. It has its own covering, walls, and chambers.
π‘οΈ Pericardium β The Heartβs Protective Covering
The pericardium is a double-layered sac that covers and protects the heart.
Think of it like a strong, waterproof bag that holds your heart and keeps it safe from shocks and friction.
The pericardium has two main layers:
- Outer Layer β Fibrous Pericardium
- Made of strong connective tissue
- Protects the heart from external pressure
- Stops the heart from stretching too much when it’s full of blood
- Inner Layer β Serous Pericardium
- This is again made of two thin layers:
a) Parietal Layer β lines the inside of the fibrous sac
b) Visceral Layer (also called Epicardium) β sticks directly to the heart surface
π§ Example: Think of the pericardium like a balloon with your fist inside it. The part touching your fist is the visceral layer, and the part away from your fist is the parietal layer. The air in between is like the pericardial fluid.
π§ Pericardial Cavity & Pericardial Fluid
- Between the parietal and visceral layers, thereβs a small space called the pericardial cavity.
- It contains around 50 mL of fluid called pericardial fluid.
This fluid acts like engine oil β it reduces friction when the heart beats and protects it from infection or damage.
π§± Wall of the Heart
The wall of the heart isnβt just a single layer. It has three important layers, each with a different role:
1οΈβ£ Epicardium (Outer Layer)
- This is the outermost layer of the heart wall.
- It is actually the same as the inner visceral layer of the pericardium.
- It gives smoothness and protection to the outer surface of the heart.
2οΈβ£ Myocardium (Middle Layer)
- This is the thickest and most important layer.
- Made of cardiac muscle tissue β a special type of muscle found only in the heart.
- It is responsible for the pumping action β when it contracts, blood is pushed out of the heart.
π§ Real-world example: Think of the myocardium like the engine of a car. It provides the power that drives blood through the body.
3οΈβ£ Endocardium (Inner Layer)
- This is the inner lining of the heart chambers.
- Itβs made of smooth epithelial cells.
- This smooth surface prevents blood from sticking and helps it flow easily inside the heart.
π§ Example: Itβs like the smooth Teflon coating inside a non-stick pan β it allows the blood to flow without sticking.
π Why Is the Structure of the Heart So Important?
The heart is working non-stop, beating around 100,000 times a day. So it needs:
- Strong protection β thatβs the job of the pericardium
- Powerful muscles β done by the myocardium
- Smooth blood flow β ensured by the endocardium
