You can think of the heart like a double pump. It receives blood, pushes it out, and keeps it moving around the body all the time. To do this job efficiently, the heart has a well-organized structure, including:

  • Four chambers (rooms for holding blood)
  • Valves (like one-way doors to control blood flow)
  • Walls (septa) to keep oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood separate

Letโ€™s look at each part in detail.

The human heart is divided into four chambers:

1๏ธโƒฃ Two Upper Chambers โ€“ Atria (singular: Atrium)

  • These are the receiving chambers.
  • They have thin walls because they only collect blood โ€” they donโ€™t need to pump it far.
  • Right Atrium: receives oxygen-poor blood from the body.
  • Left Atrium: receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.

2๏ธโƒฃ Two Lower Chambers โ€“ Ventricles

  • These are the pumping chambers.
  • They have thick, muscular walls because they pump blood out of the heart.
  • Right Ventricle: pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
  • Left Ventricle: pumps oxygen-rich blood to the whole body. Its wall is the thickest because it needs to push blood with great force.

The word septum means wall or partition. Inside the heart, we have three important septa to keep the blood streams separate:

  • Separates the left and right atria.
  • Prevents oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing in the upper chambers.

๐Ÿ”ธ 2. Interventricular Septum

  • Separates the left and right ventricles.
  • This is much thicker because the ventricles are stronger and do the heavy pumping.

๐Ÿ”ธ 3. Atrioventricular Septum

  • Separates the atria from the ventricles.
  • This wall contains the valves that regulate the blood flow between upper and lower chambers.

Valves are like one-way doors in the heart that make sure blood flows in only one direction โ€” never backward.

There are two types of valves in the heart:

These are found between the atria and ventricles. They open downward, allowing blood to flow from atria to ventricles โ€” but not the other way.

  • Found between the right atrium and right ventricle

These are located at the exit points of the heart โ€” where blood leaves the ventricles.

  • At the base of the pulmonary artery
  • Blood flows from the right ventricle to the lungs

  • At the base of the aorta
  • Blood flows from the left ventricle to the whole body
