🟡 STEROIDS
🔍 Definition and Structure
What are Steroids?
Steroids are special types of lipids that have a unique ring-like structure. These are not like fats or oils. Instead, steroids are made up of rings of carbon atoms.
Every steroid molecule contains:
- Three 6-sided rings (hexagons)
- One 5-sided ring (pentagon)
This structure is called a steroid nucleus – and it’s the same in all steroids.
📐 You can imagine it as a honeycomb pattern – but with three big cells and one small cell attached. That’s the core design of all steroids.
🧬 Cholesterol and Other Steroids
One of the most well-known steroids is cholesterol.
🧈 What is Cholesterol?
- Cholesterol is found in the cell membranes of animal cells.
- It helps keep the membrane firm and flexible – like a good quality plastic sheet that doesn’t tear easily but is not too rigid.
⚙️ What else does cholesterol do?
- Cholesterol is also the starting material for making other steroids in the body, like:
- Testosterone – the male sex hormone.
- Estrogen – the female sex hormone.
🔄 So cholesterol is like the “raw material” in a chemical factory that can be converted into many useful products, especially hormones.
💡 Real-Life Analogy for Steroids:
Think of steroids like a basic car frame (chassis) – the shape is always the same, but you can turn it into:
- A sports car (testosterone),
- A family car (estrogen),
- Or a truck (cholesterol in the membrane).
Even though the basic frame is the same, the small changes give very different functions!
🧠 Mnemonic to Remember Steroid Structure:
“3 Hexa + 1 Penta = Steroid Center”
(3 six-sided rings + 1 five-sided ring = base of steroid)
This helps you remember the structure of all steroids is made from 4 rings – three 6-sided and one 5-sided.
