🔍 What are Prostaglandins?
Prostaglandins are a special group of lipids, which are modified fatty acids.
Let’s break this down:
- Lipids are a group of molecules that include fats, oils, and waxes. They’re important because they store energy, make up cell membranes, and help in many processes in the body.
- Fatty acids are molecules made of long chains of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) atoms. When these fatty acids are modified, they turn into prostaglandins.
A prostaglandin molecule has two parts:
- Non-polar tails: These are long chains of carbon and hydrogen, which don’t mix well with water (non-polar).
- Five-carbon ring: This is a small circular structure made of five carbon atoms. It’s like the “head” of the molecule, and it helps the molecule perform its job.
🧬 Where do Prostaglandins Occur and What Do They Do?
Prostaglandins are found in many tissues of vertebrates (like humans, fish, birds, etc.). They act as local chemical messengers, meaning they help cells communicate with each other over short distances.
Here are some of the things they do in the body:
- Smooth Muscle Control:
Prostaglandins help smooth muscles (like those in your stomach or intestines) either contract (tighten) or relax.
Example: They help in the contraction of the uterus during childbirth. - Blood Vessel Control:
They can either make blood vessels widen (expand) or narrow (constrict), which affects blood flow and blood pressure.
Example: When you get a cut, prostaglandins help constrict blood vessels to prevent too much blood loss. - Inflammatory Response:
Prostaglandins are also involved in the inflammatory response to infections. When your body fights an infection, prostaglandins help cause the symptoms of swelling, pain, and redness.
