Water plays a very important role in photosynthesis — the process by which green plants make their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water.

🔹 Why is water important in photosynthesis?
Let’s understand it simply. When a plant prepares food (glucose), it also releases oxygen. But where does this oxygen come from? It actually comes from water. Yes, the plant splits water molecules during photosynthesis. When water is broken down:

  • The hydrogen part is used to help make glucose (the plant’s food).
  • The oxygen part is released into the air as a by-product.

So water gives two things in photosynthesis:

  • Hydrogen for building sugars (glucose)
  • Oxygen, which is released into the atmosphere

🌬️ This oxygen is what we — and all animals — breathe in. Without this oxygen, life as we know it would not exist. That’s how water indirectly supports all life on Earth.

🧪 What did Van Neil say?

In the 1930s, a scientist named Cornelis Van Neil proposed a very important idea. He believed that:

Plants split water during photosynthesis.

He said that plants don’t get oxygen from carbon dioxide, as many thought earlier. Instead, he suggested that:

  • Water is split (broken down) into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • The hydrogen is used to make sugar.
  • The oxygen is released into the air.

📢 This was just a hypothesis (an idea not yet proven) at that time.

Later, in the 1940s, scientists decided to test if Van Neil was right. They used a special scientific tool — isotopic tracers.

🧪 What are isotopic tracers?

These are special versions of atoms that can be tracked. In this experiment, scientists used a heavy version of oxygen called oxygen-18, written as ¹⁸O. Normally, oxygen in water and air is oxygen-16 (¹⁶O), but ¹⁸O is like a “tagged” version, so we can see where it ends up.

🧫 What did they do in the experiment?

They prepared two groups of plants:

  1. Group A: Given water with heavy oxygen (H₂¹⁸O) and normal carbon dioxide (C¹⁶O₂)
  2. Group B: Given normal water (H₂¹⁶O) and carbon dioxide with heavy oxygen (C¹⁸O₂)

After giving both groups light and conditions for photosynthesis, they collected the oxygen released by the plants.
