Plants, just like buildings, need supporting structures to stay upright, hold their shape, and resist damage from wind or their own weight. Unlike animals, plants can’t move, so they have special types of tissues in their bodies that help them stay strong, flexible, and tall. These tissues are called supporting tissues.

The five main types of supporting tissues are:

Parenchyma, Collenchyma, Sclerenchyma, Xylem, and Phloem

What is Parenchyma?

Parenchyma is the most basic and common type of plant tissue. It is found in soft parts of plants, like the leaves, roots, and the green stems of young plants. These cells are alive, have thin cell walls, and large vacuoles (water storage compartments inside the cell).

Where is Parenchyma Found?

It is found in:

  • Epidermis (outer covering)
  • Cortex (outer layer of stem/root)
  • Pith (central part of stem)

How Does It Provide Support?

The main way parenchyma provides support is through something called turgor pressure.

  • Inside each plant cell, there is a vacuole filled with water and dissolved substances.
  • The membrane surrounding the vacuole is called the tonoplast.
  • This membrane actively moves salts and ions into the vacuole.
  • Because of the high concentration of solutes (like salts), water naturally flows into the vacuole through a process called osmosis.
  • As water enters, the vacuole swells and pushes against the cell wall, making the cell firm and tight. This is called turgor pressure.

👉 When millions of these turgid (water-filled) cells press against each other, they make the whole plant part stiff and upright—just like air makes a balloon stand up!

Example:

When you forget to water a plant, its leaves droop. This is because turgor pressure drops—the vacuoles lose water. When you water it, the cells fill up again and the plant stands tall.
