What is Collenchyma?
Collenchyma is another living plant tissue, but it is a little more specialized than parenchyma. It provides flexible support to the parts of the plant that are still growing.
Where is It Found?
It is found:
- Just below the epidermis (outer skin of stem)
- In leaf stalks (petioles)
- Along the veins of leaves
🧱 Cell Wall Structure and Growth
- Collenchyma cells have unevenly thickened walls. The corners of the cells are thicker due to extra cellulose.
- These walls are still stretchable, allowing the cells to grow along with the plant.
That’s why collenchyma is perfect for young stems and growing leaves—it supports them without making them stiff.
Example:
Think of a young sunflower plant—its stem bends slightly in the wind but doesn’t break. That’s collenchyma at work!

What is Sclerenchyma?
Sclerenchyma is a type of plant tissue made of dead cells. Its main job is to make the plant hard and tough. These cells have very thick walls, which are filled with a substance called lignin.

Lignin is an organic chemical that makes the cell walls:
- Hard
- Rigid
- Waterproof
It’s like cement between bricks—once lignin is added, the cells become strong, stiff, and permanent.
