After more research, scientists grouped plants into three categories based on their flowering behavior:
1. Long-Day Plants (LDPs):
- These plants need long days and short nights to flower.
- They usually flower in spring or early summer, when days are getting longer.

2. Short-Day Plants (SDPs):
- These plants need short days and long nights to start flowering.
- They usually flower in late summer or autumn, when nights get longer.

3. Day-Neutral Plants (DNPs):
- These plants don’t care about day length. They flower whenever they are mature and in good conditions.

🌙 The Role of Darkness – Not Daylight!
This is very important:
Scientists found that the length of the dark period (night) is actually more important than the length of the day.
📌 Key Point:
- Short-day plants need a long, uninterrupted night to flower.
- If you interrupt that night with light, they won’t flower.
- Long-day plants can flower even in short days if the long night is broken by light.
💡 Example:
If a short-day plant needs 12 hours of darkness to flower, but you turn on the light after 6 hours of darkness for just 5 minutes — flowering is stopped. That 5-minute light is enough to reset the plant’s internal clock.

Plants don’t have clocks like we do, but they use light-sensitive proteins to measure time.
