Vernalisation is a special process some plants need to go through before they can start flowering. It involves exposing the plant to cold temperatures for a certain period.

- So, vernalisation is the process by which exposing a plant to cold (like winter) helps it to prepare for flowering in spring.

Some plants won’t flower just because the days are getting longer or there’s more sunlight. Instead, they need to go through a “cold experience” first, just like how some animals hibernate and wait for winter to pass.
🌿 Which Plants Need Vernalisation?
Vernalisation mainly applies to:
- Biennial plants (plants that take two years to complete their life cycle)
- Perennial plants (plants that live for many years)
These plants won’t flower unless they feel the cold.

A common example is winter wheat. If it doesn’t experience cold, it won’t flower and produce grain, even in the best sunlight.
