Lesson 12: Terpenes and Steroids

What are Terpenes?
Terpenes are a large group of natural compounds that belong to the lipid family. They are found in many plants and some animals, and they give us a wide range of useful substances like essential oils, vitamins, and pigments.

You can think of terpenes as building blocks in nature’s chemistry set, especially for things related to smell, color, and protection in living organisms.

All terpenes are made by linking together smaller units called isoprene units.

🧪 Isoprene is a simple hydrocarbon molecule, which means it’s made of hydrogen (H) and carbon (C) atoms only. The formula of isoprene is:

CH₂ = C(CH₃) – CH = CH₂

Let’s break it down simply:

  • It has 5 carbon atoms.
  • It is called “unsaturated” because it contains double bonds, which means it’s not filled up with hydrogen.
  • It’s branched, meaning it’s not just a straight line but has a side group (CH₃).
  • I = Isoprene
  • See = Single unit
  • Cute = CH₃ (methyl group, the cute little branch)
  • Chameleons = Carbon atoms
  • Dancing = Double bonds

This silly sentence helps you recall that isoprene is a branched molecule with double bonds and 5 carbon atoms.

Terpenes are not just chemical units – they do important jobs in nature.

Here are some major roles of terpenes:

  1. 🌿 Chlorophyll – the green pigment in plants that helps them do photosynthesis (making food from sunlight) is made from terpenes.
  2. 👁 Retinal pigments in the eyes (especially in the retina) – these help us see light and color.
  3. 🥕 Vitamin A – which is good for vision, growth, and immunity, is also a terpene.
  4. 🌳 Rubber – the stretchy substance we use in tires and gloves, is a polymer of isoprene, which means many isoprene units linked together.

Imagine you are using LEGO blocks. Each isoprene unit is like a LEGO block. By connecting different numbers and types of these blocks, you can build:

  • A green LEGO tree (chlorophyll),
  • A color sensor LEGO gadget (retinal),
  • Or a stretchy LEGO band (rubber)!

That’s how terpenes work – the same small unit (isoprene) is used to build different large, useful molecules.
