Two scientists, Garner and Allard, discovered this in 1920. They noticed that some tobacco plants only flowered when the days were short β€” like in the autumn season.

If you grow these tobacco plants during long summer days, they don’t flower. But if you simulate short days (long nights) in a lab, they do flower β€” just like in autumn.
